Henneko sent a strong signal of intent today as Azuki Azusa emerged victorious over veterans Nanoha, Biri Biri and Mihoko in a day filled with fake votes particularly for the magical girl and the esper. Henneko has been tipped to be J.C. Staff’s leading light for this year’s tournament, and today’s results seem to confirm that. As for BiriBiri, would it be another year where she slips up before the quarter finals yet again? We’ll see.

As for the other contestants, Yuri Yuri continued their encouraging performance as Himawari obtains a 5th place spot, not far from the three veterans above her. Minami-ke gets another main round spot as Haruka is through, leaving Chiaki left to complete the set. Misaki did well for her first time out, though it was done with assistance from Biri Biri. Niko does surprisingly well considering Love Life’s performances so far, finishing above her comrade Eri -another surprise in itself as Eri has been one of the more popular idols in the polls. Guess 2ch voters still prefers ’em small. Garupan continues to perform below expectations with Hana only managing 10th, while Karen’s performance will not be an encouraging sign for the Monogatari girls.

On to Group 8, where we’ll see the return of the magical girls from the Madoka series. 2011 finalist Kyouko and Homura will lead the way, and they’re favorites for a 1-2 finish as there isn’t really much competition for them. Chu2Koi’s Shinka could spring a surprise here considering that Rikka and her arch enemy Dekomori have done well but it would be a tough ask.

There will be also a first glimpse of how Saki will fare against Madoka as Tacos and Hisa are up for battle. It would be intriguing to see how these two series match up against each other, both having dominated the tournament in the past 2 years. That said, Tacos and Hisa are not really Saki’s top aces though, despite the latter having reached the semi-finals of last year’s tournament.

As for the other spots we have,

  • Railgun’s Fren da, who’s been garnering some new fans thanks to the new Railgun season.
  • While Hayate has been on the decline, Hinagiku should still qualify from this group easily.
  • Garupan still fails to impress, but here’s a chance for them with Anzu representing them. Nonna might tag along too.
  • Cure Peace was the Precure’s star player in last year’s Saimoe, and she still is.
  • 2ch always fancy their imoutos, especially those who have main roles. Oniai’s Akiko will be the beneficiary of that.
  • Sasami managed to qualify and will be hoping that her best friend and adviser Kagami will follow suit.
  • Dog Days’ poor form in Saimoe shows no sign of stopping, but can Eclair sneak a main round spot for them here?
  • MGX’s Urabe managed to qualify directly last year, can she do it again?
  • Also the Yuyushikis Yuzuko and Fumi are also in contention for the qualifying spots.

Prediction (Top 3): Homura, Kyouko, Shinka
The rest: Tacos, Hisa, Frenda, Anzu, Hinagiku, Cure Peace, Akiko, Yuzuko, Kagami, Eclair, Nonna

    252->165, 242->162, 206->194. That’s a lot of fakes.

    Looks like Neko Toki can win whole tournament.

    Poor Maria 😦
