Charisma

Infinite Stratos’ Charlotte Dunois survived a very competitive matchup against Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu’s Shimada Minami to advance to the Third Round of Anime Saimoe Tournament 2011. Char’s win was the first one for Infinite Stratos in the Second Round after opening its campaign with two consecutive losses. She will face Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica’s Miki Sayaka the following round.

Yoshika Miyafuji made it three wins for Strike Witches in Round Two, after she dismantled MM’s Yuuno Arashiko and Hidamari Sketch’s Hiro. She will battle with Madoka Magica’s Tomoe Mami in Block Semifinals of Block F.

That match got me really nervous for Char, as I expected her to win more convincingly. There was a bit of hopelessness, to be honest, because it appeared that Minami was leading. She actually led for a while, but there were a lot of well-placed fake votes. Kudos to the one who deployed those fakes I’m sure they got a lot of spectators off-guard.

So with Char’s win, Infi is on board in Round Two, but I don’t like her chances against Sayaka at all at this rate. That’s stil further down the road, but she’s gonna need a better effort if she really wants to make it all the way to the quarterfinals.

As for Yoshika, solid win to right the ship for Strike Witches. She gets Mami next though, and again, I don’t know about how she’s gonna get out of that one ahead.

We have two intriguing matches to continue Blocks E and F:

Infi will be trying to keep the momentum going as it fields Pika-tan against Ayumi and Yukikaze. I like Ayumi here even though Honne has been doing well with what’s given to her since the prelims. It won’t be a shock if she ends up winning over Ayumi. I would be surprised though if Yukikaze ends up prevailing in this one, given Dog Days’ freefall ever since Millhi won the first match of the tournament (referring to prelim 1 of course).

Yuuko-Nano is also going to be good. I picked Nano for my fantasy team because I think she has a fighting chance (see Yuuko against Suzuha), but I’m leaning towards Yuuko prevailing. This is gonna be a tiebreaker for A-Chan who had one disappointing performance from Tooru and one good run from… Run. But if Yuuko can beat Shana (even though obviously it was with a little help from her friends), she certainly is capable of beating Nano. Again it all boils down to Yuuko-Nano, essentially a coinflip in my opinion.

Although Char won, that was certainly too close for comfort. IS seems to be struggling in Round 2 thus far, which is somewhat of a surprise considering their impressive performance in the first round. A win is still a win though, and Char sets up a tantalizing clash with Sayaka in the next round in a battle between two big factions. Meanwhile, Yoshika did well today to give Strike Witches their third representative in Round 3, but will she be able to handle Mami who’s in hot form at the moment?

Moving on to today’s matches – could be an exciting day ahead. For Block F, Nano vs Yuuko – both the ace of their respective series. Yuuko has a better combined prelim+R1 stat,

(average votes/average vote %)
Winners only:A-Channel 267.33 (45.53%) vs 352.5 (47.48%) Nichijou
Overall: A-Channel 184.83 (31.08%) vs 233.83 (36.85%) Nichijou

Nichijou seems to have more backing than A-Channel at first glance, but perhaps a crucial factor to take note of here is that inflation in vote numbers for Nichijou was a result of their match-ups being held on the same day as powerful characters, but for A-Chan, the only inflation was caused by Yuuko in her own battle against Shana – yes she might have been aided by strategic voting but hardly anyone expected her to pull off the assassination.

Going for Yuuko here, but I’ll not be surprised if Nano snatches a win.

As for the other match-up, it could turn out to be a three-way battle. Interesting enough, the three of them have had their Round 1 numbers boosted by high-profile match-ups on the same day. In fact, even their combined prelim+R1 statistical rankings are almost similar to each other! In terms of faction support, it’s IS > TWGOK > Dog Days, but Pika-Tan is a side character. IS is in a slump as of late, so could Ayumi seize the opportunity here?

Picks: Ayumi, Yuuko
Prediction: Ayumi, Yuuko
