Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai’s Gokou Ruri was impressive in her Anime Saimoe Tournament 2011 opener, dominating Tantei Opera Milky Holmes’ Sherlock Shellingford in the anticipated Block H matchup. Nakatsugawa Ui (Hoshizora he Kakaru Hashi) finished third.
Ikaros punctuated Sora no Otoshimono’s outstanding opening round run with a landslide victory over Angel Beats’ Shiina and Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka’s Hiramatsu Taeko.
Infinite Stratos also soared en route to Round Two, after Shinonono Houki eliminated To Aru Majutsu no Index’s Orsola Aquinas and Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls’ Sanada Yukimura.
1 435 Shinonono Houki @ Infinite Stratos
2 242 Orsola Aquinas @ To Aru Majutsu no Index II
3 92 Sanada Yukimura @ Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls
1 465 Ikaros @ Sora no Otoshimono series
2 176 Shiina @ Angel Beats
3 123 Hiramatsu Taeko @ Kore wa Zombie Desuka?
1 480 Kuroneko (Gokou Ruri) @ Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai
2 378 Sherlock Shellingford (Sharo) @ Tantei Opera Milky Holmes
3 49 Nakatsugawa Ui @ Hoshizora he Kakaru Hashi
Gonna walk through quickly the matches I’ve missed first:
>A Prelim Group rematch in consecutive days. Ryouko gets the receving end of Kanon’s taser once again.
>We’ve seen how capable the upper-tier of KamiNomi characters are (LC styling, Haqua’s ousting of Azusa). The bad news for Ryouko is that Kanon belongs in that upper-tier, making this a no-brainer.
No surprise on Kanon laying down the law, although Nyaruko over Ryouko was something I didn’t really see coming.
>This situation is not warui for Hitoha at all. Okay. That was terrible. P1 vs P2ers yeah yeah yeah.
>Bad pun or not, Hitoha’s definitely heading to Round Two anyway.
This ended up being closer than it should be, but ultimately it won’t matter in round 2.
>Good day sunshine!
>Just take care of business here and all-time win number 26 is in the bag.
>As for K-On, I’ll just quote Saimoe Anon’s poster: “This is the way it ends, not with a bang but with a whimper.”
K-On sure did, as it was a total styling by Hidamari’s Miyako.
Agnese Sanctis-Migiwa Kazuha-Fuyukawa Kurusu
Harukaze Asuna vs. Shimada Hazuki vs. Shirai Kuroko
>So what are the odds of Agnese doing better than Mikoto before the draw was revealed? Just another day in Saimoe.
>Raildex double team once again. At least that’s the benefit of fielding many characters, right?
Early scare for the more-heralded series, but Raildex packed enough punch to carry Kuroko and Agnese all the way. Also Mikoto comment is moot anyway, so yeah.
Lala Satalin Deviluke vs. Haruna vs. Amatsume Akira
>At least Korezon’s ace won’t go out in the first round.
She chained, she saw, she conquered.
Orsola Aquinas vs. Shinonono Houki vs. Sanada Yukimura
>I’m running out of witty things to say so yeah, Houkiwinslol.
Ikaros vs. Shiina vs. Hiramatsu Taeko
>Scratch what I said earlier. Looks like SoraOto is getting two wins minimum at the very least.
Well, SoraOto will be finishing the opening round with five wins, frustold, etc.
Sherlock Shellingford vs. Gokou Ruri vs. Nakatsugawa Ui
>Quite a dangerous match for Kuroneko, especially with IS potentially getting involved in the upset. Kuroneko has enough to prevail, like superstars often do. If she can’t beat someone like Sherlock, then it means she won’t be beating any Puella Magi in the long run, anyway. Nonetheless, one of the top matches for the round.
Kuroneko really made it easy with a championship-caliber win. Winning by 100 is a lot, especially for someone as potentially strong as Sherlock, so yeah, OreImo’s living up to the hype I originally gave them in the preseason. So far so good for their dynamic duo.
Predictions: 9-0 in that stretch (70-23 overall). Block H is incredibly predictable, it’s not even funny as compared to the past seven blocks.
Picks: 5-3-1 (43-48-2) during that stretch, as Sherlock, Celty and Shiina all lost.
Time to wrap up the opening round with, surprise, more predictable matches.
Group 12 11th 175 27.52% Phantom Thief Arséne (Henriette Mystere) @ Tantei Opera Milky Holmes
Group 13 20th 95 12.10% Aizawa Eiko @ Shinryaku! Ika Musume
Group 5 2nd 363 42.91% Kanzaki H Aria @ Hidan no Aria
>The draw, barring any changes has Aria primed for the long run, and an amusing match pitting Holmes against the Phantom Thief is the perfect way to start it.
Milky Holmes is on pace to lose three straight after the hot streak. Kokoro’s pretty much their best hope now to cause some fireworks with Sherlock’s demise as Henriette will be in a mismatch against Aria. We already saw how capable Aria is in the prelims, and I won’t be surprised if that translates into success Round One and onward.
Group 8 19th 84 10.28% Kan’u Unchou (Aisha) @ Shin Koihime†Musou series
Group 12 2nd 249 39.15% Touhara Asuha @ Astarotte no Omocha!
Group 16 13th 162 20.48% Yin @ Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha Gaiden
>Asuha takes a rather easy one to continue the one-two punch with Astarotte.
Too easy for Asuha. There’s not much to discuss here.
Group 13 25th 85 10.83% Myoudouin Itsuki (Cure Sunshine) @ HeartCatch Pretty Cure!
Group 1 9th 125 22.94% Perrine-H. Clostermann @ Strike Witches 2
Group 3 12th 122 15.52% Akagi Sena @ Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai
>H. seems to be the winning middle initial as Perrine is also favored to get a win of her own.
Perrine might actually get challenged here, but we’ve seen how capable Strike Witches is when against mid-tier foes, so one more Witch through to Round two.
Prediction: Aria, Asuha, Perrine
Picks: Henriette, Yin, Itsuki
Kuroneko was once again able to attract the numbers, with her match-up against Sherlock and Ui hitting past the 900-vote mark. Splendid win, and she would be looking forward to racking up the numbers before a potentially tricky block final. Ikaros and Houki had convincing wins too, with the former recording 60.86% of the votes and the latter pushing Infinite Stratos’ average vote percentage to 50.39%, the best in R1.
So it will be an anti-climatic end to Round 1, with Aria and Asuha surely clinching victory today. Perrine could probably be troubled by Cure Sunshine, but she should still be able grab the win based on Strike Witches’ superior series strength.
Picks: Eiko, Asuha, Perrine
Prediction: Aria, Asuha, Perrine
