Merry Nightmare, the titular character from Yumekui Merry had a dream start Sunday, as she defeated Heartcatch Precure’s Kurumi Erika and Queen’s Blade’s Airi to advance to Round Two of Anime Saimoe Tournament 2011.
Also progressing to the Second Round was Strike Witches’ Gertrud Barkhorn which notched the series’ first Main Draw win for 2011. Remaining winless was Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai as Shiomiya Shiori managed only second. To-Love-Ru’s Sairenji Haruna finished third.
Amane Suzuha gave Steins;Gate its second win, dominating both Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls’ Yagyuu Jubei and Sekire’s Musubi.
1 281 Gertrud Barkhorn @ Strike Witches 2 [47.95%]
2 228 Shiomiya Shiori @ Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai series [38.91%]
3 77 Sairenji Haruna @ Motto To Love-Ru [13.14%]
1 258 Merry Nightmare @ Yumekui Merry [45.91%]
2 182 Kurumi Erika (Cure Marine) @ HeartCatch Pretty Cure! [32.38%]
3 122 Airi @ Queen’s Blade OVA: Utsukushiki Toushitachi [21.71%]
1 290 Amane Suzuha @ Steins;Gate [53.70%]
2 154 Yagyuu Jubei Mitsuyoshi @ Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls [28.52%]
3 96 Musubi @ Sekirei: Pure Engagement [17.78%]
As I feared, KamiNomi really is derping in this tournament badly. Gertrud won, sure, but I thought the deficit would be smaller. Strike Witches might be packing some punch, and might even end up being used by other stronger factions for upset bids, at the very least. Not that Shiori was a strong contender for KamiNomi, but yeah, still impressive for the Pantsu Crew nevertheless.
Re: Merry Match: She was expected to win, but I appreciate how Erika fought until the bitter end. The fact that Erika did not get smashed is a small consolation I guess. Whether Merry can carry this momentum as the matches get tougher remains to be seen.
Lastly, Suzuha won easy, bucking the trend from the heartstopping matches we’ve seen from Steins;Gate in ther last two outings. Easy win, indeed.
So, a clean slate in predictions (3-0; 11-7) , but I got 1-2’d in picks (5-13) , losing two (Erika and Shiori) in my theoretical top ten/fifteen. ;_;
Group 3 10th 139 17.68% Mitsuba Mutsumi @ Seitokai Yakuindomo
Group 5 5th 276 32.62% Mifune Ryuuko @ Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko
Group 11 6th 174 27.02% Kurusu Kanako @ Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai
>Snap judgment has me going for Ryuushi, and the numbers tell me that I am right.
There’s quite a gap between the levels of these characters, and the only thing Kanako has going for her in this match is that she’s from a stronger faction. But Ryuushi will style. We get a first-hand look at Denpa Onna’s strength in this match.
Group 15 12th 160 22.25% Shinonono Tabane @ Infinite Stratos
Group 4 13th 135 18.17% Huang Pao-Lin (Dragon Kid) @ Tiger & Bunny
Group 16 18th 81 10.24% Houjou Ayano @ Moshidora
>Uh, oh, no for Ayane. It’s basically the Dragon Kid vs Houki’s sister. Tough match to call but I’m gonna go with Dragon Kid, who barely missed out in Ohana’s group. Tabane meanwhile barely made it in Tooru’s group. Series strength obviously goes to IS’ advantage but that won’t always give you a win. I think this will be a textbook example of that.
In retrospect Dragon Kid might not have enough for this after seeing Karina lose a match that I thought she really shouldn’t have. Switching my prediction to Tabane, as IS tries to build on Rin’s stellar win.
Group 12 12th 148 23.27% Minakami Mai @ Nichijou
Group 10 12th 164 19.88% Tsuchiura Iroha @ Onii-chan no Koto nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne!!
Group 7 12th 115 17.22% Angelene @ To Aru Majutsu no Index II
>Looks like an even match among the three, so I am going to rely on my instincts – Iroha wins this match close match involving three characters that placed 12th in their prelim groups.
Sticking to Iroha on this one. Mai will probably troll me, but I feel that being one of Onii-chan no Koto’s “mains” will be the edge that Iroha has over the other two 12th placers.
TL;DR: Pretty much an underwhelming affair today, tbh, but this is how it goes.
Predictions: Ryuushi, Tabane, Iroha
Picks: Judo, Dragon Kid, Mai
Ouch, Barkhorn sure gave Shiori a beating in the end. Here, the less-renowned Strike Witches faction proved their worth against the weaker Kaminomi series. Will it be enough though when Barkhorn comes up against her next competitor, which will most likely be Ryuuko? We shall see.
So next up, more low-key matches – perhaps the calm before the storm (somewhat). Denpa Onna’s been decent in the prelims, so the minor Oreimo character should not be stopping Ryuushi from securing victory today. Pao-Lin will take on Tabane for a spot in the next round – the latter has a bit of a boost thanks to series backing, but from the prelims, we’ve seen that the less popular IS characters have struggled when left on their own. Tabane was probably received some additional votes from Laura fans during the prelims, so Pao-Lin could stand a chance here.
The final match for the day features a battle between 12th-placed contestants in their respective prelim groups. Mai and Angelene has the upper hand over Iroha in terms of series backing, but they were assisted by a more popular character from their respective series during the prelims. I would narrow it down to Mai and Iroha, and I think the latter will edge this one out despite the fact that the Nichijou anime is still ongoing.
Picks: Ryuuko, Tabane, Iroha
Prediction: Ryuuko, Pao-Lin, Iroha
