Unquenchable Fire

Shana continued to build up on her Saimoe accolades with yet another Prelim group win in Anime Saimoe Tournament 2011 First Preliminary Round. She has remained unbeaten in the prelims since 2006. Finishing second was Cecilia Alcott from Infinite Stratos, with Sora no Otoshimono’s Nymph closely behind at third. Fourth place went to IS’ Huang Lingyin, and fifth to Morishima Haruka, representing Amagami SS.

Hagimura Suzu (Seitokai Yakuindomo) ended up sixth, Yuzurizaki Nero (Tantei Opera Miljy Holmes) seventh, Eclair Martinozzi (Dog Days) eighth, Sanada Yukimura (Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls) ninth, Nakatsugawa Ui (Hoshizora he Kakaru Hashi ), ninth Amatsume Akira (Yosuga no Sora), eleventh, and Kinoshita Yuuko (Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu) garnering the final slot for the day.

The eternal flame indeed. That certain mystique Shana has still mystifies me up to this day. Maybe it’s the pain of losing (when it matters the most) that continues to drive her fans to this very day? Characters and factions have come and gone, yet the flame still burns the same. Puzzling. With this win, my cardboard bet against Game8910 looks more and more foolish each passing day.

I predicted her to win this group though, because I was slowly losing my faith on IS. I don’t know if 30-something votes can be considered “close” but that’s what it is on paper. Anyway as I said this group is pretty good at first glance still impressive performances for those who made it. Only 9-3 (127-29) in predictions though. I thought Eiko was a lock but apparently not. Pretty tight group but I don’t think I missed other obvious names.

Now time for the most boring group ever…

Group 14: Cool story, Random Draw!

So we’ve got here a group that won’t be beating anyone who topped the previous groups before them (except uh, Nako?). Anyway, yeah, that’s the story of this group. Just really weak. It doesn’t get more underwhelming than this one this year, and let’s just get this out of the way.

The favorite to win this group (or at least the one that comes to mind) is Elsea/Elysia/Elucia/Elsie/LC. I know KamiNomi is mid-tier, but this group is very much mid-tier. And she’s their ace. If she doesn’t win this, I don’t know anymore. Of course there are higher-tiered factions here, but they are represented by their supporting characters. I’m looking at Tomoe here for HanaIro, Chaos for SoraOto, Maekawa for Denpa Onna and Chizuru for Ika Musume.

I also think the following will qualify (though odds are high that they normally won’t directly qualify under normal circumstances): Tsumugi (HoshiKaka), Ricotta and Rebecca (Dog Days), Kaede (SYD), and Natsuru (Kampfer).

Really slim pickings here, I’m just gonna guess the following also will make it: Yukiko (Dororon) and Tsukimi (Kuragehime). Those are my two guesses. Maybe Yuki (Mitsudomoe), Q (C) and Kanon (Kiruminzoo) will be lucky enough too, but I frankly don’t know. I’m quite sure I’m still gonna miss someone here, but hey, I tried, lol. Now that’s what you call scraping the bottom of the barrel!

Coming soon: the penultimate prelim 1 group, and it definitely ain’t as bad as this one.

ETERNAL BLAZE: While other veterans are slipping, Shana continues to persevere in the hope of finally winning the crown, topping her prelim group with relative ease. The newcomers’ winning streak comes to an end, and the doubts over the IS girls continue to linger. Based on today’s performance, they don’t seem to be a major force that we have hyped them up to be, but I would not jump to conclusions for now. Let’s see how the remaining two IS girls perform in the upcoming groups.

Eclair’s performance was disappointing, and the promise shown by Dogs Day from Milhiorre’s victory back in Group 1 is fast fading away. On the other hand, Nymph was impressive – finishing only 2 votes behind Cecilia – and I think she’ll be able to put in a good shift once the main round starts.

ON THE NEXT GROUP: The worst prelim grouping out there. If anyone’s able to predict the Top 12 for this group accurately, I tip my hat off to you. In any case, the show must go on. Elsie, the ace of Kaminomi, is favorite to clinch the top spot here, with Maekawa of Denpa Onna, Chaos of Sora no Otoshimono and Ricotta of Dog Days her closest competitors. Denpa Onna’s been on a good roll, with Erio, Meme and Ryuuko having made it to the main round convincingly, while Sora no Otoshimono hasn’t been doing bad either. Chaos and Ricotta will benefit from some seiyuu mojo too, however, I don’t think that will be enough to beat Elsie.

Top 3 Prediction: Elsie, Maekawa, Chaos

Boring, expected win by Shana. She’s always unstoppable in prelims and the few few rounds of every main tournament; just wait for the inevitable crash and burn, it will make the experience all worthwhile.

I’m disappointed in Eclair, and Dog Days in general. I thought Milly’s group 1 win was a sign of things to come, but now I don’t hold out any hope for the others.

Oh Shana…She has at least another year of this too.

Here’s hoping she makes it to the semi finals this time!
