Toy Story

Astarotte no Omocha’s titular character Astarotte Ygvar debuted in spectacular fashion, beating K-On’s Akiyama Mio to finish first in Group Nine of Anime Saimoe Tournament 2011 First Preliminary Round. At distant third was Takanashi Nao (Onii-chan no Koto nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne!!). Finishing fourth and fifth respectively were Yoshida Yuki (Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?) and Charlotte (Mahou Shoujou Madoka Magica).

Sixth to twelfth place finishers were Mercelida Ygvar, also from Astarotte no Omocha, Stocking (Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt), Mizushiro Kanon (Jewelpet), Msyu (C), Miyamae Kanako (Maria Holic), Musujime Awaki (To Aru Majutsu no Railgun) and Imagawa Yoshimoto (Sengoku Otome).

Saw this coming, and true enough, it was a close fight between Astarotte and Mio, but the former had more in reserve. Tomonori failed my expectation as she didn’t even manage third place. This group ended up being a true clusterfuck, as I botched my predictions badly, overlooking Stocking, Kanon and Mercelida (didn’t watch those shows, tbh) while Kanako and Msyu did better than expected. Ended up 7-5 in this round, my worst yet, bringing me to an 87-21 clip. Let’s see if I can do better the next group, and here we go…

Two newcomers are gonna go at it today for first place in Group Ten. Sayaka vs. Victorique. We already know what Madoka as a faction is capable of, as they quickly asserted their authority in the first half of the first preliminary round. Sayaka might be one of the weaker ones in the Madoka five, but that merely means she is not “unfair” to go up against, at this point of the competition. GOSICK, on the other hand, is an unknown quantity at this point. I wonder if Victorique can match up to Sayaka, 2ch pundits seem to think so. This one is too close to call, but in case of doubt, it’s more prudent to go with the faction that is packing heat. So Sayaka it is to win this group, Victorique falling short to second in what should be a close and entertaining match.

I think Yuno is poised to take third place here, but she can be derailed by surging series such as A-Channel (Nagi) and Denpa Onna (Meme). I think Sohara (SnO) and Eila (Strike Witches) are locks as well. Fighting for the bottom half of this group would be Himegami (Raildex), Akari (Jewelpet), Iroha (Ochinko), Haruna (TLR) and Moeka (Steins;Gate). So that’s twelve.

In the end I think the following are also in contention to make the fight to the last few slots more interesting: Eva (Negima), Avril and Chelsea (Campanella), Futaba (Mitsudomoe) and Elfleda (Astarotte). And there you have it.

TL;DR version: Madoka continues to aim for the sweep with Sayaka winning a close fight over Victorique.

Coming up next group: curbstomping with a certain black cat.

NOT ENOUGH: Mio attempted to stage a comeback in a bid to secure a top place for the K-ON!! faction but it wasn’t enough as she succumbed to the Rie-powered succumbus, Lotte. Compared to last year, the K-ON!! main five + Ui have accumulated 1118 less votes in this year’s preliminaries, which is quite the slump even after factoring in the tighter gaijinban.

FACTION WATCH: Other notable results today include Tomonori finishing 129 votes behind Lotte, a result that further supports the likelihood that Korezom aren’t gonna make huge waves in this year’s competition. Yamada-sensei of IS didn’t even make it to the Top 12, but as I said in my preview yesterday, I’m not really worried about IS not performing well for now as I’m expecting a character-focused approach.

ON THE NEXT GROUP: And yet another Puella Magi steps up to the plate as tragic heroine Sayaka faces off against Victorique, who has a strong charm of her own. It would be interesting to see how this match will turn out; the former has strong faction support, while Victorique seems a character who can hold her own ground. Yuno from Hidamari Sketch is an outside bet, but seeing how the veterans are flopping at the moment, I doubt she’d be able to top the group. A tough one, but I’m gonna take a risk here and predict Victorique to win it. Erio wasn’t far off from Mami, and neither was Aria from Kyouko, and Sayaka’s the least popular among the main five. I think our adorable lil’ detective might just be able to nick it.

Top 3 Prediction: Victorique, Sayaka, Yuno

My predictions for the next 3 prelims:

    10: Sayaka @ Puella Magi
    11: Kuroneko @ Oreimo
12: Shirayuki @ Hidan no Aria

13, I’m honestly conflicted three ways. Hyouka from Index, Jeanne D’arc from Aria, and, of course, Shana. All three come from adaptions of Light Novels, 2 are from series which already have their hooks sunk into the top 3 of this years first prelims. And then there’s Shana, who’s always been a contender.

Also, Madoka for 16. Don’t even pretend that’s not gonna happen.

Anyway, glad to have found this site. Can’t wait for more coverage.
