Angel Beatdown

Group 1 gets some much deserved drama with Iwasawa Ami beating Merry Nightmare by 766 votes, reinforcing Angel Beats’ dominance. Tachibana Kanade continues to power her way through her opponents by receiving 5997 votes in I-4, facing tougher opponents than she did in I-2. And Yui (AB) defeated Saber quite easily by a margin and 936 votes. Even though Shiina (AB) did not win, she came within 100 votes of defeating Furukawa Nagisa, a respectable opponent from an anime that has consistently done well in ISML.

So Last Order beating Ritsu came out of absolutely nowhere. Ritsu is probably my #2 K-ON girl, but right now I’m sick and tired of K-ON dominating ISML so I’ll take a change. In fact, Last Order may be really unlucky to be in the same group as Mikoto, or else she might take 2nd place in another group. Ui barely beating out Yami means she will probably make regular season…again.

We all know Mio was going to win Group 1 from the start, but some may have clinged on to the hope that Merry could squeak out a win, sort of like Ryou trolling Hitagi last year. But nah, Iwasawa decides she doesn’t want to disappear just yet. Merry has cute fangs too.

Charlotte continues her massacre by squashing Nymph, who beat Nanoha earlier. It’s going to be fun to see Charlotte vs. Nanoha, hurr. Let’s see if Nanoha will lose by more than she lost to Azusa this round.

Two of my favorites lost barely, Izumi to Suigintou and Nozomi to Ika-Musume. Ika-chan is pretty cute so that isn’t bad. Suigintou needs to retire cuz this isn’t 2004.

And Haruhi beat out Yuri, her fake counterpart. This match was actually closer than I thought, because of the SHnY movie and all. Actually, I thought there would be some kind of Kanade fans vs. Yuri fans, similar to the Rozen Maiden fanbase. But now I’m beginning to think that AB fans just vote for every AB character possible. Haruhi was 8th in DE last year, so Yuri couldn’t be so far behind, so Top 16 strength.

Continuing from the previous tl;dr, Saber was in DE last year and Yui beat her quite easily. Unless something really amazing and trollish happens, we’re guaranteed that Kanade, Yui-nyan, and Yuri will be in the Top 16. Yui had 51.1% support from Taiwan on the map, which is extremely good for a region that supports Kugimiya tsunderes.

And lol Madoka can’t even get second place in her match, which is pretty surprising, because that means Madoka is at most 3rd strongest in the series. Main characters being 2nd strongest isn’t too rare (Sanzenin Nagi, Takamachi Nanoha), but man, people must really hate Madoka, or its character development. To rub it in, Anri stole Madoka’s spot at the very last moment:

Kirino killed Fate and swept all regions. The “Triple K” threat (Kanade, Kirino, Kuroneko) is becoming more true.

Holo managed to pull out a close win against Haruna. So aside from Eucliwood, Kore wa Zombie characters are not Top 16 strength. But Haruna will probably still be in the 17-25 range during regular season. Now I’m starting to wonder what would happen if Yoshida Yuki appeared on the anime during nominations.

Speaking of screentime, Laura got a pretty nice dere episode, but that didn’t help her beat Mikuru. IS characters so far have not challenged a Top 16 strength character yet, so it would be interesting to see if they are strong enough. Laura did have a nice rush at the beginning of voting but steadily got overtaken by Mikuru.

And finally, we have the great upset, Tsumugi over Nagi. Nagi placed 10th in DE last year, so this is…quite troubling. This would make Tsumugi Top 16 strength, which I refuse to believe. I’m really hoping this is a fluke or something. The more amazing thing is that Nagi won in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong but still couldn’t defeat the worldwide K-ON popularity.

If you weren’t following about the region talk, remember that to the right of each result on the ISML site is a globe that you can click on to view which region voted for which character. It’s quite interesting. I-5 and I-6 will be reviewed in one post, since the really interesting matches starts on I-7 where there will be more rage and less boring analysis.

For someone who doesn’t talk, Eu sure is strong. 5000 votes is quite a feat.

ahelo// Expect her popularity to decline, when she starts speaking. 😛

Madoka has a chance to redeems herself, which depends on the next few remaining episodes of the anime. I sure hope she will show her potential. However, Madoka series is not strong enough to compete in ISML anyways. Madoka is massively popular in Japan, but it is not in other places. For Madoka fans, they will have to wait for j-saimoe if they want to see thier girls winning anything.

Round 5 will have some interesting matches. I am personally worried about Elsie, cuz Angel Beat’s collective strength seems to be too much for her.. I think Iwasawa will beat Elsie, but I am hoping for the best.

Madoka is insanely popular in Japan so I think AST will change the opinion on Madoka. Its kinda like Saki which dominated AST 2 years in a row yet completely sucked at ISML.
