Hayate no Gotoku!’s Katsura Hinagiku opened her fourth Saimoe campaign with a huge win as she emerged on top of a very competitive Group Twelve which featured heavy tournament favorites Tachibana Kanade from Angel Beats!, Akiyama Mio from K-On!, and Kataoka Yuuki from Saki. Together with To Aru Kagaku no Railgun’s Shirai Kuroko, which finished fifth, the top five finishers from this group broke the previous record for most votes in the Preliminary Round of the Anime Saimoe Tournament 2010.
Joining the aforementioned five in the main draw were 2007 champion Furude Rika from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Tsukuyomi Komoe, also from Railgun, Tohasaka Rin from Fate/Stay Night, Chika from Hidamari Sketch, Sakura Akari from Jewelpet Tinkle, Haibara Ai from Detective Conan, and lastly, Wilhelmina Carmel from Shakugan no Shana.

Well, shit just got real. In all honesty, I did not see Hinagiku doing well against tournament favorites Tenshi and Mio. Genuinely surprised, and elated. This proves that Hayate still really has it, despite the fact that it has been almost a year since the last episode of Hayate has aired, and nary a presence compared to K-On!! and Angel Beats. The only plausible explanation I have for this outcome would have to be Hayatefags really are pushing their favorite characters for that sought-after Saimoe win, after three years of coming close (Finals, Semifinals, and Quarterfinals appearance for the faction in the last three years). Great win is great, but fans like me have to be wary that hate votes now will inevitably come Hinagiku and Nagi’s way now that it is finally revealed how strong they (still) are.
As for Mio’s performance, I’m a little surprised and disappointed. Going down to fourth place is just not cutting it. Even Kuroko got almost close to her. Tenshi, on the other hand, I can’t really say. Perhaps, I expected too much? Anyway, absent the unexpected Hayate surge, Tenshi would have owned this group. All is good.
There’s a huge gap between the top five in the rest (almost 100 votes). Rika performed as expected of her, so did last year’s top 32 contender, Komoe. Rin, 2006 quarterfinalist is a disappointment, in my opinion. Indeed how far FSN has fallen since then. Chika clinched, and once again, Jewelpets is represented. Ai makes her 9001th Saimoe main draw appearance, while Wilhelmina sneaked in for the final slot.
6-4-0 in picks, again super tough group so imokaywiththis.jpg. Predictions went 10 of 12, and again Jewelpets fell under my radar together with Ai. Didn’t call the winner right. Definitely okay with that though.
All in all, this group sure did break the record for votes this round, and perhaps a sign of things to come. I hope this reinvigorated the voters’ interest back in Saimoe, as it is all serious business now. The hype was met, and time for more Saimoe action.
Group Thirteen Preview
After that superb match which broke records, we have a breather once again. A becoming patterin in this year’s Prelims so far. Basically this bunch is about Fate, and everyone else. Which is a good thing since in a field of midcarders, some of my picks have a great chance of sneaking in at the main draw without having to resort to with the second prelim. And I’ll leave it to fate how my guesses for qualifiers will go. Well it’s not entirely a blind guess, but a hunch based on the series performance of the other characters so far.
