Segawa Izumi of Hayate no Gotoku has started off a renewal of a rivalry against Saki with a victory over Ryuumonbuchi Touka, 347 to 299 to lead Group Three in the Anime Saimoe Tournament 2010 Preliminary Round One.
Araragi sisters Tsukihi and Karen from Bakemonogatari notched third and fourth places respectively, while Kijima Saki, also from Hayate, got fifth place. Kanamemo’s Nakamichi Kana ended up in sixth. Sora no Otoshimono’s Mitsuki Sohara, Hayate’s Hanabishi Miki, Hatsune from Angel Beats, Suminoe Riko of Kiss x sis, and Oomichi Miyabi from GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class filled up the last six slots.
The rest of the results are here.
Okay, I didn’t expect GA to do some poorly, but maybe Kyoujyu was really one of lesser popular characters in GA. And I might have underestimated Bakemonogatari mojo, though in all honesty I was about to put them in the list, but pulled them in the last minute. So I’m 8 of 12, with Sekine floundering in favor of Otonashi’s sister, Ookami sucking as expected, UmiMono the same, and BakaTest note so impressive in a debut for a side character.
As for Hayate, it appears that they still have some mojo left, as they qualified three in one group. Touka put up a fight as expected, but Izumi just was the stronger character.
Group Four Preview
After a rather lackluster group three, Saimoe returns to real serious business in possibly the most loaded group of the prelims. To get things started:
- four of the six main Hidamari characters are here: Saimoe veterans Yuno and Miyako, and ×☆☆☆ additions Nori and Nazuna;
- the K-On! contingent is also represented, with Tainaka Ritsu and Yamanaka Sawako;
- Seitokai no Ichizon’s Shiina sisters Mafuyu and Minatsu are also present;
- so are GA’s main two – Yamaguchi Kisaragi and Noda Miki.
Those are actually enough to fill in the ten of the twelve slots, but that still doesn’t take into account Durarara!’s Celty Sturluson, Sora no Manimani’s Akeno Mihoshi, Kyon’s Sister from Haruhi, Precure’s Hanasaki Tsubomi, Umineko’s Ushiromiya Jessica, Negima’s Miyazaki Nodoka, Higurashi’s Sonozaki Shion, and Hayate’s Harukaze Chiharu, Katsura Yukiji and Kasumi Aika. And there are others more.
If I would hazard a guess onto how the group will pan out, I’ll lay it out like this:
- Kyon’s Sister
- Sonozaki Shion
I can easily bomb out here like in the previous group, but obviously this group is a litle harder. It’s like two prelim groups combined into one. I think Mafuyu will win because she’s the most popular SeiZon character, and Minatsu probably not far behind. Ritsu does not compare to the popularity of the Yui-Mio-Azusa trio, but K-On still has powerful series mojo and that is enough to land her in the top three, perhaps even second place. Yuno and Miyako will team to complete the top five, while I believe Noda and Kisaragi can at least make it to the top seven despite the fact that I overestimated the faction’s strength. Nazuna and Nori also has Hidamari fanbase behind them, while Kyon’s sister has always been there in Saimoe main draw brackets. Sawako-sensei will make it thanks to K-On block vote, while probably occupy the last slot.
As for my votes, there were some painful cuts, but I ended up like this:
Noda – Noda-chan aura, princess, genki girl moe, princess, spunky, she’s just awesome and cute rolled into one.
Ritsu – I love characters with a personality like Ricchan, and remove her headband and the world will be divided by zero, or something like that.
Yuno – a perennial top ten of mine in Saimoe tournaments. She accidentally my nutbladder.
Miyako – Love and Piece! Gotta love her attitude.
Minatsu – seeing a common trend here? Like Ricchan before her, those ribbons are moe limiters. Remove them and yeah…
Kisaragi – oh dear, my nutbladder’s at a critical. also, those glasses, how do they work? Haruka Tomatsu.
Ichinose Nagi – in my eyes, the number one Nyan Koi character. KobaYuu.
Kagura – vote for my favorite Kugimiya Rie role.
Miyazaki Nodoka – ranging from moe to awesome. Mamio also.
Tsubomi – she’s no Hinagiku, but she still has the power of flower. And yeah, Nana.
Well, should be a fun group. Stay tuned for the last part of my (late) Saimoe “pre-season” preview, and of course, the fallout from this Group Four Bonanza and Group Five preview.
