Azusa Rocks Group 1

K-On’s Nakano Azusa lead a powerful cast Saimoe characters in the Preliminary Round 1 Group 1 of the 2010 Anime Saimoe Tournament, overcoming the challenges of Working’s Taneshima Poplar, Bakemonogatari’s Sengoku Nadeko, Seitokai no Ichizon’s Sakurano Kurimu and Spice and Wolf’s Horo.

Azusa’ win is an early statement of the power of the K-On voting fanbase, and she just managed to edge what appears to be Saimoe power: Poplar, by seven votes (362-355).

The rest of the Preliminary Group qualifiers are Bakemonogatari’s Hanekawa Tsubasa, Sora no Otoshimono’s Ikaros, Angel Beats’ Iwasawa, Koihime Musou’s Gentoku, Nogizaka Haruka and Higurashi tandem Houjou Satoko and Sonozaki Mion.

The results can be found here.

Hmm, so I was wrong expecting Nadeko to win. Might have underestimated K-On a little, but in any case, got most of the predictions right (11 of 12). And most of the characters I voted for got in through the main draw, except for two which will get a second crack at it a few weeks from now.

Moving on to Group 2. Railgun’s Misaka Mikoto and Clannad’s Fujibayashi Kyou will lead this group, which is somewhat devoid of star power other than those two, as compared to the previous one. Interestingly, those two are in for a rematch of AnimeFans Saimoe Tournament finals, but in Saimoe, this won’t even be a contest. Biribiri will dominate this group, that’s all there is to it. Clannad has been out for too long.

In any case, the hard part is determining how the rest will fare. Ranking them of course borders the realm of impossibility, but if I have to make a hunch on who will get in, it will probably end up like this:

  1. Misaka Mikoto
  2. Fujibayashi Kyou
  3. Hiro (Hidamari)
  4. Mizuno Kaede (Nyan Koi)
  5. Togame (Katanagatari)
  6. Takanashi Kozue (Working!!)
  7. Shirafuji Kyouko (Working!!)
  8. Mishima Akane (Kampfer)
  9. Yoshida Kazumi (Shana)
  10. Ayase Yue (Negima)
  11. Kuchinashi (NEEDLESS)
  12. Hojouin Seika (Princess Lover)

Okay, that was hard. I’m counting that the series mojo of the characters involved will be enough to push them through to the second round. I’ll probably be proven wrong, but I’m quite confident that this is how the group will pan out.

As for my votes-

Biribiri – She’s just too cool and seeing her cute side is quite a treat.
Kyou – Hirohashi Ryou, long purple hair, zettai ryouki, tsundere, dictionary throw, drives a motorcycle and doesn’t afraid of anything
Ayase Yue – awesome Negima girl. love that hairstyle too.
Mizuno Kaede – love her voice. Iguchi Yuka.
Hiro – Gotouzama-sama!
Takanashi Kozue – Itou Shizuka vote
Kurumi Momoka – ditto.
Yoshida Kazumi – actually like her better than Shana. you can crucify me now. Kawasumi Ayako.
Togame – Yukarin!
Kirisawa Erika – Ayahime vote.

Noticed that most of my votes are VA-based. what is this, i don’t even. That’s all for now, and I can guarantee that the headlines for tomorrow won’t  shock anyone. As for group 3, that remains to be seen.
