Anime Saimoe Tournament 2010 Preview: Part Three

Part three of the preview, puns incoming.

K-On! – It’s safe to say that the K-On franchise is the best positioned player in this year’s Saimoe. If there exists a power ranking for Saimoe factions, K-On is probably number one. By the time Saimoe reaches its wee rounds, K-On is still out there, airing, and its presence very much abound. Also, with Toradora’s Taiga not around to defend her crown, last year’s runner-up Hirasawa Yui is the highest placing character in the draw. Should she be placed in a light bracket, she’ll likely cruise to the later rounds. However, I don’t think she’ll do an encore, but her other bandmates will be picking up the slack and shine in the spotlight. Therefore, I’m predicting that Akiyama Mio and Nakano Azusa will go deep this year, and I won’t be surprised if one of these two (or both) reach the quarterfinals and beyond.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha – Nanoha and Fate are back in the Saimoe scene, and once again, in their “loli form” It’s hard to tell if their 2005-2006 form is back along with them. Loli Nanoha hasn’t been beaten by anyone not named Fate, nor the latter has been defeated by dolls, which are unfortunately absent from the tournament. One of the two will probably reach the Round of 24, but that should be it. Here’s a chance to prove the naysayers wrong, however, and if such feat be achieved, then it’s safe to say that the Nanoha franchise will go down as the greatest in Saimoe history. And the scary part is, they’re not done yet…

Kimi ni Todoke – show sold well, but shoujo shows generally don’t do well in Saimoe. So yeah, it’s not all sparkles and bubbles for Kuronuma Sawako this time around.

Omamori Himari – Himari and the rest will probably need lots of lucky charms to ensure that they’ll go past the second round, and that is being optimistic.

Kampfer – more like Kan’t-fer, as long as Saimoe is concerned. Nothing more than the second round.

Ookami Kakushi – the show’s characters will probably be wolfed away by Horo, or even worse, the stronger factions.

Nogizaka Haruka  no Himitsu– it’s no secret that this show will have a hard time beating the heavy hitters, but Mika provided some spark last year. Second round, probably.

Ladies vs. Butlers – Hayate, this is not.

Mayoi Neko Overrun – Hard to tell. Again, even if they manage to get out of the first round, from thereon, Fumino and the rest will probably be overrun by stronger competition.

Nyan Koi – the show needs more love from the Saimoe voters if they want to go far.

Mahou Sensei Negima – Negima is still here, thanks to the OADs. Had there been a canon anime series adaptation of the manga, how will this show have performed. We will never know, but the sad reality is that Evangeline, Konoka and company are first rounders and that the glory days of 2005 (and Konoka’s 2007) are long past.

Katanagatari – Bakemonogatari, this is not.

Kiddy Girl-AND – Eclair once reached the quarterfinals of Saimoe. I would be kidding if I said that she’ll do it again.

Kiss x sis – If ever  the sisters are fortunate enough to reach the main draw, then that would be the  time to kiss them goodbye thereafter.

Kodomo no Jikan – No time for Saimoe, etc.

Natsu no Arashi – Arashi and Jun made a brief appearance last year. Expect the same this year.

NEEDLESS –  the show needs more love from the Saimoe voters. yes, same lines as that of Nyan Koi, just different emphasis.

Princess Lover! – no love puns this time around, but still doesn’t take away the fact, that Charlotte, Sylvie and the rest will be first round fodder.

Queen’s Blade – They won’t be reigning over Saimoe anytime soon.

Saki – Although Saki is returning this year after the previous year’s record-setting performance which only fell two wins away from the title, 2010 is looking to be a rougher outing. I am under the impression that Saki will not be able to send a representative to the Elite Eight, as it has been ages since the show last aired, and the show can only hope that the (ongoing) manga would be able to keep the voters’ interest. The Saki characters will definitely put up an inspired fight though, but I feel they are going to get Teru’d by this year’s stronger factions. Random prediction: Tacos will be the one who will go the furthest in the bracket.

Several bad puns later, and i’m done. Next up, Seitokai, Shana and Suzumiya Haruhi and others. No disappearance jokes this time, I promise. Also, look forward to the Preliminary Draw later.

“last year’s runner-up Hirasawa Yui is the highest placing character in the draw”

Slightly off here. Yui is the highest placing character from 2009. Nanoha is a returning champ and Fate is also a runner-up.

Some of the newer series might make an impact, so long as they survive long enough for their shows to develop fanbases.

ah yeah, on that point you’re right. what i intended to mean was that she is the highest placing character from last year, so i guess i didn’t make that point clear enough. ^^
